Coast Guard Seaman Frank Lenihan keeps slack out of a wire rope attached to a Van Veen grab sampler while Lee Cooper, a member of the science team aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Healy, steadies the device and two fellow science members rinse it Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2017, prior to redeploying it in the southern Chukchi Sea.
Keeping slack out of the wire rope prevents potential hazards and damage to equipment, such as the wire slipping as tension is added after slack creates abnormalities in how it is wound around the drum.
