Pfc. Derek Gilbert is a combat engineer with Combat Logistics Battalion 4, supporting Northern Viper, Aug. 11-18, 2017. He has trained with soldiers from the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force and learned about their mine clearing line charges on the demolition ranges. NV17 tests the interoperability and bilateral capability of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force and U.S. Marine Corps forces to enhance regional cooperation between participating nations to collectively deter security threats. “It was interesting seeing the different ways they employ their explosives,” said Gilbert, a Cashiers, North Carolina native.
