A plaque commemorating 1st Sgt. Edward Smith hung during a building dedication ceremony at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif., Aug 23, 2017. 1st Reconnaissance Battalion dedicated the boathouse compound in honor of Smith who passed away April 5, 2003 as a result of wounds received while engaged with enemy forces in Central Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
