U.S. Marine Corps Pfc. Charles L. Califf, a 25-year-old native of Cincinnati, Ohio, takes a fighting stance before body sparring during the Crucible at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C. Califf is with Platoon 3045, Lima Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, and is scheduled to graduate June 16, 2017. “I wanted to be part of the close brotherhood and get out from my comfort zone,” said Califf. “I wanted to give back to my country while going out on whatever adventure the Marine Corps has in mind for me.” Approximately 19,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 12 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 49 percent of male recruits and 100 percent of female recruits in the Marine Corps. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Lance Cpl. Joseph Jacob)
