Flatley Memorial Award to, left to right, USS Makin Island (LHD 8) Commanding Officer Capt. Mark Melson, Safety Officer Lt. Cmdr. John Gutierrez and Air Officer Cmdr. Chad Falgout, during a ceremony on the ship’s flight deck. Makin Island and the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit received the award for excellence in aviation safety.
