Kane, an improvised explosive detection dog, retrieves a toy from a compound entryway during a training scenario in Musa Qal’eh, Jan. 4. Marines and their dogs practiced clearing roads and compounds of IEDs using explosives-scented materials. Each IED dog is familiar with the chemical odors associated with a majority of IEDs in Afghanistan. When an IED dog identifies the smell of one of these chemicals they alert their handler that they’ve found something.
