MOUNT BUNDEY TRAINING AREA, Australia – U.S. Marine Lance Cpl. Noah Thatcher, assistant gunner, Weapons Company, 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, Marine Rotational Force – Darwin, fires an 81mm mortar system during Exercise Koolendong 2017, July 12, 2017. Marines in Weapons Company, were given commands during a live fire exercise from a Forward Air Controller – Airborne element in order to integrate surface-to-surface fire with air to surface fire. Koolendong 17 is an annual, battalion-level bilateral live fire event designed to improve combat readiness and provide training opportunities that strengthen the interoperability of U.S. Marines and sailors, Australian Defence Force, and French Army New Caledonia.
