Brown, a native of New Bern, N.C., was awarded the medal for actions conducted during a combat logistics patrol, Sept. 5, 2010. The patrol was heading toward Sangin, Afghanistan, when an improvised explosive device went off and hit the vehicle that Brown was in. He suffered a grade-three concussion during the explosion.
