JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (June 14, 2017) – Lt. Cmdr. Joshua Garland (left), an orthopedic surgeon at Naval Hospital Jacksonville, instructs Michaylah Ortega, a Darnell-Cookman School of the Medical Arts student, on applying plates and screws to a fractured tibia as part of the hospital’s Science, Service, Medicine and Mentoring (S2M2) program. Eleven Darnell-Cookman high school students were aboard the hospital, June 12-16, for the S2M2 internship. The partnership complements the school’s focus on equipping high-performing students with the skills to pursue advanced medical degrees.
