Former U.S. Army Spc. Carlos Ortiz looks over the area where he served in 2004 at Contingency Operating Location Gaine's Mills, Iraq, Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010. Ortiz, who served with the 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment "Wolfhounds," got a chance to see the progress made at his old base, now a partnered base between U.S. and Iraqi forces, as part of Operation Proper Exit. Operation Proper Exit provides wounded servicemembers with trips back to the war zone to gain closure and leave the country on their own terms.
