U.S. Marines with The Basic School (TBS) participate in the Montford Point Biathlon at Camp Barrett, on Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va., April 7, 2017. During World War II, President Roosevelt awarded African Americans the opportunity to be recruited into the Marine Corps, and provided basic training at Montford Point Camp in North Carolina. This annual event is held for TBS Marines, to honor the hardships faced by Montford Point Marines by competing in a 6.5 mile course, in which four-man teams run from TBS to Weapons Training Battalion, shoot 20 rounds of ammunition in prone and standing positions, then run back to TBS.
