Justin Hummer, 27th Special Operations Support Squadron Joint Ground Liaison Office NCO in charge, hugs his mother after receiving the Purple Heart May 5, 2017, at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M. Hummer received the decoration after sustaining shrapnel wounds and a traumatic brain injury during a mortar attack on his 2007 deployment to central Iraq. The pinning ceremony was the first celebration of Hummer that his family was able attend since he graduated Army Basic Training in 2000.
