The P-38 was included in the C- and K-Rations meal packs starting in World War II. It disappeared in the early 1980s when Meals-Ready-To-Eat and similar products became available. Although long gone, the field utensil has survived as a keepsake among old Soldiers. It celebrates its 75th anniversary this year.
