Hundreds of Soldiers, friends and family members listen to Homer Ooten, foster father of Maj. Gen. Francisco A. Espaillat, during a memorial service honoring his son’s legacy April 14, 2017, at First United Methodist Church in Oviedo, Fla. Espaillat, who died April 7 in Ft. Bragg, N.C., recently earned his second star and was preparing to fill the role as the chief of staff for U.S. Army Reserve Command. Ooten recalled how his adopted son from the Dominican Republic used his competitive spirit, commanding presence and compassionate character to excel in sports, academics and Boy Scouts. These successful endeavors coupled with his unwavering patriotism led to Espaillat’s commissioning in the U.S. Army in 1982 and his rapid climb to major general in 2017. (U.S. Army photo by Sgt.
