PATUXENT RIVER, Maryland (March 30, 2017) - Chief Aviation Machinist's Mate (AW) Gary Rondon, NAS Patuxent River Headquarters Chief Duty Officer, prepares to raise the U.S. flag for morning colors with members of the command's Chief Petty Officer's Association March 30. The collection of chiefs, senior chiefs, and master chiefs were on hand for a group photo in preparation of the 124th birthday of the U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer.
The rank of chief petty officer was established April 1, 1893 in recognition of the unique leadership capabilities of senior enlisted personnel, who provide technical and administrative expertise while also bridging the gap between officers and junior enlisted personnel.
