Joint Force Headquarters - Iowa National Guard

Iowa Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Carmen Z. Davis, of Ankeny, Iowa, Service Support Noncommissioned Officer and Yellow Ribbon coordinator at Joint Forces Headquarters, in Johnston, Iowa, looks through old photographs from basic training in the late 1970s. Davis is one of just three remaining Soldiers in the Iowa National Guard who originally joined the Women’s Army Corps, a separate branch of service for females created during World War II and disbanded in 1978. She entered the WAC in her native Yuba City, Calif., after being turned away from a job at Dairy Queen because she was “too short to reach the ice cream cones.” (U.S. Army National Guard photo by Sgt. Christie R. Smith)
