Col. Christopher Patton, the commanding officer of Marine Aircraft Group 24, and Sgt. Maj. Sean Cox, the sergeant major of MAG-24, salute during a memorial service for retired Marine Col. Vincil W. Hazelbaker, at the Hawaii Memorial Park Cemetery, March 24, 2017. After the ceremony, helicopters from MAG-24 conducted a missing man formation, which is an aerial salute performed during a flypast of aircraft at a memorial event, typically in memory of a fallen pilot. Hazelbaker was a Marine aviator who served in the military for 34 years. During his service, he flew more than 680 combat missions and earned the Navy Cross for his extraordinary heroism during the Vietnam War. “If dad stood here today, he would have saluted and said ‘well done,’” said Brad Hazelbaker, Wayne’s son.
