170323-N-BB269-078 PHILIPPINE SEA (March 23, 2017) Boatswain’s Mate 1st Class Katrina Williams, assigned to the amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6), issues out abandon ship pouch-type life preserving units to participants in a simulated non-combatant evacuation operation (NEO) in the hangar bay aboard the ship. NEO drills are conducted to ensure Navy and Marine Corps units can quickly and efficiently evacuate, treat, and process American citizens in an emergency situation if assistance is requested by the Department of State. Bonhomme Richard, flagship of the Bonhomme Richard Expeditionary Strike Group, with embarked 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, is on a routine patrol operating in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region to enhance warfighting readiness and posture forward as a ready-response force for any type of contingency.
