PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. -- Under a thick haze of smoke, Presidio of Monterey Fire Department Strike Team spends some time at the Soberanes Fire response staging area in Toro Park, Monterey County after completing a 24-hour shift protecting homes threatened by the blaze. The strike team joined thousands of other firefighters in their efforts to battle a large wildfire that has burned more than 23,000 acres in the hills between Carmel and Big Sur.
