MANAMA, Bahrain (Jan. 11, 2017) U.S. Marines and Sailors with the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group/11th Marine Expeditionary Unit listen to a local Bahraini woman describing the prayer area of the Al Fateh Grand Mosque during a city tour Jan. 11. The Bahraini woman, along with her son, explains their customs and provides traditional attire for the Marines and Sailors within the mosque. The tours provided by the USS Makin Island’s (LHD 8) Morale, Welfare and Recreation team enable the service members to experience and understand the Bahraini culture as well as have an up-close and personal interaction with the community. The city tour includes a visit to a camel farm, the Al Fateh Grand Mosque, Sweet Soque, Bahrain Fort, Bahrain National Museum and an authentic Arabic lunch at Veranda Café. The Makin Island ARG/11th MEU is currently operating in support of regional security and stability in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations as part of their Western Pacific 16-2 deployment.
