Sgt. John Hyland (left), a former 6th Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division soldier, who was injured in Iraq by a roadside bomb, receives the Meritorious Service Medal from Maj. Gen. Daniel Allyn, commander, 1st Cav. Div., at a ceremony marking his medical retirement from the military, Aug. 3. The medal and ceremony were upgraded by the division’s command sergeant major because of his sacrifices.
