    Operation Walking Shield is an annual exercise that is part of the Innovative Readiness Training program it works to build relationships between local communities and Department of Defense units. The IRT program offers primarily medical service and construction expertise to communities across the country. The IRT program offers a chance for meaningful training for the DoD and tangible benefits for the communities they serve.

    Walking Shield offers an opportunity for the medical professionals of the Army Reserve Medical Command to use their training and talents to both help the community and the Army with utilization of both use their skills and knowledge in a in a real world environment while working and training as a unit.
    The Soldiers participating in operation come from several different units and states. Walking Shield allows the 7231st Medical Support Unit to bring their skills and training together to support the mission. Walking Shield offers training opportunities for the Reserve Soldiers to use and train in their military specialties. This increases the Reserve Soldiers skills and readiness while helping to serve the community.
