Meet the sailors who crew Navy hovercraft

Chief Petty Officer Scott Smith poses for a photo in front of landing craft air cushion hovercraft in the well deck of USS Carter Hall (LSD-50) Dec. 12, 2016 at sea. Smith is A Sergeant Bluff, Iowa native and the chief gunner’s mate with Detachment D, Assault Craft Unit 4. LCACs act as vital transport vehicles in ship-to-shore operations, capable of carrying up to 60 tons of cargo, inflating a large skirt beneath them to move fluidly at sea and on beaches. Smith is participating in Amphibious Ready Group Marine Expeditionary Unit Exercise, a three-week training evolution intended to build upon previous relationships, thereby enhancing Navy and Marine Corps interoperability and amphibious warfare capabilities to tackle a wide range of operations. During the exercise, Sailors and Marines work together to conduct flight operations, noncombatant evacuation exercises, simulated raids and visit, board, search, and seizure drills.
