    III Marine Expeditionary Force   

    U.S. Marine Corps Col. Charles A. Western awards service members with Japan Ground Self-Defense Force’s Western Army, Dec. 12, 2016, at Camp Courtney, Okinawa, Japan, for their efforts during exercise Yama Sakura 71. During YS 71, U.S. Marines and Sailors with 3d Marine Expeditionary Brigade partnered with JGSDF Western Army service members to focus on bilateral planning, coordination, and interoperability to enhance the U.S.-Japan security alliance for continued peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region. Western, the 3d MEB chief of staff, is from Sanger, California.
