On Sept. 10, 2006 a monument with a photo representing Sgt. John P. Phillips, an explosive ordinance technician with 3rd Explosive Ordinance Disposal Platoon (EOD), 9th Engineer Support Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group, set up during a memorial held at main side chapel here Sept. 10 in honor of Phillips and Staff Sgt. Dwayne E. Williams, a team leader with 3rd EOD platoon. Phillips, a St. Stephen, S.C., native, died Aug. 16, 2006 at Brooke Army Medical Center, San Antonio, succumbing from wounds received March 7, 2006 while involved in operations in the Al Anbar Province. Williams, a Baltimore native, lost his life Aug. 24, 2006 from wounds sustained while engaged in operations in the Al Anbar Province. "They cared, they loved and they gave their lives to make others safer, and to give others a shot at freedom," said Lt. Alan M. Snyder, 36, chaplain of 9th ESB and Cleveland, Okla., native. 3rd Explosive Ordinance Disposal Platoon, 9th Engineer Support Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group is deployed with I MEF (FWD) in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in the Al Anbar Province of Iraq (MNF-W) to develop the Iraqi Security Forces, facilitate the development of official rule of law through democratic government reforms, and continue the development of a market based economy centered on Iraqi Reconstruction.
