South Carolina Army National Guard engineers on Edisto Island have been working non-stop clearing 3-5 feet of sand on Palmetto Boulevard to clear the way for fire, EMS and other emergency personnel in order for residents to safely return home. At its peak, approximately 2,800 S.C. National Guard Soldiers and Airmen were activated to support state and county emergency management agencies and local first responders after Governor Nikki Haley declared a State of Emergency Oct. 4, 2016.
