Staff Sgt. Kevin Drescher, aide to the Fort Bliss garrison command sergeant major, dips two metal rods, each with different properties, into hot and cold water while exhibitor Michael Ursini observes. The more reactive metal is a product from GTherm, a geothermal energy company that harnesses energy without a water reservoir. Drescher and others spent time with exhibitors like GTherm June 8 at the Renewable Energy Rodeo and Symposium held in and around the Centennial Banquet and Conference Center at Fort Bliss, Texas, taking place through June 9. The inaugural event is designed to help spread the ideas, tools and innovations ready to make Fort Bliss the Army's Center for Renewable Energy. The symposium presented a variety of energy technology demonstrations, several discussion panels and dozens of exhibitors, including General Dynamics Land Systems, Lockheed Martin, General Electric, Raytheon, Polaris Defense Industries, 3M Defense, Honeywell and others. The U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center co-hosted the symposium.
