An instructor ties an obi, also known as a scarf, during a Japanese Tea Ceremony Class at the Yayoi Kimono Shop and Cultural School Sept. 17 in Naha, Okinawa, Japan. The class gave Status of Forces Agreement members the opportunity to dress in traditional Japanese garments and learn about Japanese culture firsthand. During the class, instructors who hosted the event dressed the SOFA personnel in kimonos and taught them the customs and courtesies that accompany visiting a Japanese home. The students learned how to properly receive tea and refreshments and how to prepare the matcha, which is a powdered green tea commonly served at tea ceremonies.
