160911-N-OY799-284 PHILIPPINE SEA (Sept. 11, 2016) Seaman Nia Williams, from Vallejo, California, maintains a tight grip on the phone-and-distance line on the flight deck of the Navy's only forward-deployed aircraft carrier, USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), during a replenishment-at-sea with the Military Sealift Command (MSC) dry cargo and ammunition ship USNS Charles Drew (T-AKE 10). The phone-and-distance line is used for bridge-to-bridge communications and allows the officer of the deck to keep track of the distance between ships. The line is 300 feet long and is marked with a flag every 20 feet. The non-combatant, civilian-crewed MSC ship is part of the supply lines to Navy ships at sea, and strategically provide fuel, food, ordnance, spare parts, mail and other supplies around the world. Ronald Reagan, the Carrier Strike Group Five (CSG 5) flagship, is on patrol in the Philippine Sea supporting security and stability in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
