Friends and family of former Alaska National Guard Adjutant General Maj. Gen. John Schaeffer, Jr, share an embrace following the memorial service of the late general, at Kotzebue, Alaska, Aug. 31, 2016. Schaeffer enlisted in the Alaska National Guard in 1957, and served for 34 years. Schaeffer was the first Alaska Native two-star general of the Alaska National Guard and commissioner of the Alaska Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.
