Army Sgt. James W. McDonald, an Asheboro, North Carolina, native serving as a trumpet player for the U.S. Army Japan Band, shakes hands with Col. Ryuji Yamanouchi, commander, 34th Infantry Regiment, Eastern Army, Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, during the closing ceremony for Shizuoka Prefecture’s annual Comprehensive Disaster Drill in Kakegawa, Japan, Sep. 4, 2016. McDonald and 11 fellow U.S. Army Soldiers participated in this drill that demonstrated how a diverse collection of local, regional, national and international organizations can pool their respective resources to effectively respond to a major disaster. The contingent of U.S. Army troops applied their fundamental warrior skills by coordinating with their JGSDF counterparts to coordinate convoy routes, establish mobile communication sites, set up supply distribution points and provide casualty care.
