Lieutenant Gen. Rex C. McMillian, Commanding General of Marine Forces Reserve, honors Col. Jonathan Mendes, World War II and Korean War veteran, during a ceremony at Times Square, Aug. 29, 2016. Marines, both active and reserve, celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Marine Forces Reserve alongside Marine veterans, new recruits, and members of the New York Police Department and the Fire Department of New York. Mendes served 32 years in the Marine Corps, and was responsible for training legendary astronaut and Marine John Glenn.
