During his visit, Richardson participated in discussions with Haney and other USSTRATCOM leaders on modernization of the sea-based leg of the nuclear triad and other areas of collaboration and mutual interest. Richardson also hosted a Navy all-hands call, during which he discussed the U.S. Navy’s design for maintaining maritime security today and into the future. As the CNO, Richardson is the senior military officer of the Department of the Navy and is responsible to the Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) for the command, utilization of resources, and operating efficiency of the forces of the Navy and of the Navy shore activities assigned by the secretary. One of nine DoD unified combatant commands, USSTRATCOM has global strategic missions assigned through the Unified Command Plan, which include strategic deterrence; space operations; cyberspace operations; joint electronic warfare; global strike; missile defense; intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance; combating weapons of mass destruction; and analysis and targeting.
