PACIFIC OCEAN (August 18, 2016) – Sgt. Josh Gerde, from Cincinnati, Ohio, loosens bolts on the rear rotor of a CH-53E Super Stallion assigned to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron (VMM) 163 during a bearing inspection on the flight deck of the of the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8). Makin Island is conducting integrated training with Amphibious Squadron Five and the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit in preparation for an upcoming deployment.
