More than 40 U.S. Navy troops, deployed from Operational Health Support Unit, provided immediate, basic health care to Haitians in the Les Cayes area during a Medical Readiness Training Exercise. The MEDRETE was conducted over 10 days, in which the doctors, dentists and optometrists saw more than 4,100 patients. Local Haitian doctors, Haitian Coast Guard members and Uruguayan Soldiers assigned to MINUSTAH also assisted in the MEDRETE. Two MEDRETES have been conducted in the southern region of Haiti. The first was in Port Salut. The MEDRETEs are an example of what Haitians may expect with the New Horizon projects, scheduled to begin in June.
