AT SEA (August 15, 2016) - Lance Cpl. Samuel Benavides sights in through an optic during a straits transit exercise as part of 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit's Composite Training Unit Exercise aboard the USS Makin Island (LHD-8). Optics can help to gather visual information quicker than radar and are used to identify foreign vessels attempting to harass ships by picking up potential threats up to 27 miles away.
