Master Toru Kiyan’s gi reads “Okinawa Kenpo” while training Marines participating in a Marine Corps Martial Arts Instructor Course Aug. 10 at Gunner’s Fitness Center aboard Camp Foster. Okinawa Kenpo focuses on self-defense and may differ with its teacher. Kiyan taught the Marines basic Okinawa Kenpo Karate moves such as a sweeping block, finger thrust, and how to properly make a Karate fist. The class was integrated with an intensive three-week long program which Marines must undergo to teach the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program to other Marines.
