Secretary of the Army Eric Fanning awards a coin to Spc. Philipp Boebel, an infantryman with 3rd Battalion, 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division after observing a fire and maneuver range August 4, 2016 at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska. Boebel was selected to receive the coin due his actions during a recent airborne operation where he became a towed jumper, was released and conducted a successful tree landing miles from his objective. He proceeded to recover his M-240B machine gun then informed his platoon sergeant of his status and continued the mission without hesitation in true arctic Spartan fashion.
