U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Jonathan D. Wedemeyer, from Lupton, Colo., with Company C, 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, Task Force Lethal Warrior, receives a Bronze Star Medal with Valor for exhibiting remarkable courage and valiant fortitude during a fierce enemy engagement in eastern Afghanistan's Kunar province, July 17. While on patrol, the platoon took uncharacteristic heavy and accurate fire from multiple enemy locations. Wedemeyer, who had severely sprained his ankle, selflessly exposed himself multiple times to accurate enemy fire to ensure the safety of his fellow Soldiers. When the medical evacuation helicopter arrived to take away five injured Soldiers, Wedemeyer selflessly assisted the medics hoist the Soldiers to safety while still taking direct fire from the enemy. Gen. George W. Casey, the Chief of Staff of the Army, presents Wedemeyer's award, on Forward Operating Base Fenty in eastern Afghanistan's Nangarhar province, April 30. (Photo by: Pfc. Beth Raney)
