    Commander, U.S. 3rd Fleet

Full-time National Serviceman (NSF) Corporal Teng Chong Lim is serving his two-year mandatory military service as a Navigation Systems Specialist on board Republic of Singapore Navy stealth frigate RSS Steadfast. RIMPAC is his first overseas deployment since enlisting in July last year.

But Lim is no stranger to the sea. His father has been a Navy regular for the past 30 years, and often shares stories of his time sailing. Today, Lim is glad to have found a mentor and listening ear in his father. His father’s advice to him prior to RIMPAC? “Enjoy the ride, have a good relationship with the ship crew because they are the ones that will be keeping you company for the three months. Have fun with them.”

And for Lim, RIMPAC has unquestionably been an experience of a lifetime. He is one of few NSFs who get the opportunity to sail across the Pacific for the world’s largest international maritime exercise.

“As an NSF, it’s all about experience. To try things that you will never do unless you sign on,” he said.

“Being at RIMPAC is definitely an experience because we exercise with other countries on a very big scale. We can learn from them and their professionalism; operating with my ship crew has also taught me a lot of things and they are all important soft skills that I can bring with me after I complete my National Service.”
