Students attending a week-long weather camp at the Wyoming National Guard-sponsored STARBASE Academy in Cheyenne prepare to launch a weather balloon with assistance from Phil Bergmaier, University of Wyoming grad student and atmospheric science balloon specialist, June 30 at the Joint Forces Readiness Center. The 6th and 7th-graders created payloads to send up, along with camera’s and tracking devices. Bergmaier expected the balloon to reach 100,000 feet. Twelve-year-old Nathaniel Cashion predicted the marshmallow in his payload cargo would expand and crack at that altitude. (Wyoming Army National Guard photo by Sgt. 1st Class Jimmy McGuire/released)
