Lance Cpl. Jeffrey A. Knoll is searched after trying to sneak weapons through an entry-control point during a training scenario, June 20, 2016, as part of Exercise Koa Moana, during Task Force Koa Moana’s deployment in the Asia-Pacific region. Hasty personnel searches are a tool used to prevent contraband and weapons entering a specific area such as a military base. Koa Moana is the first multi-national, bilateral exercise between the Papua New Guinea Defence Force and U.S. Marines and is designed to increase interoperability and relations by sharing infantry, engineering, law enforcement and medical skills. Knoll, from Vassar, Michigan, is a combat engineer with Task Force Koa Moana, originally assigned to Bravo Company, 9th Engineer Support Battalion, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, III Marine Expeditionary Force.
