Kentucky National Guard Sgt. Ryan Hunter, a medic assigned to the Kentucky National Guard’s CBRNE Enhanced Response Force Package (CERFP), shows members of the Summit Pacific Medical Center (SPMC) evaluates a patient during a Vigilant Guard exercise June 11, 2016, in Elma, Washington. The KY-CERFP assisted the SPMC with setting up and testing its abilities for decontamination of mass casualties for the first time in the hospital's three-year history as part of the Vigilant Guard program, a series of homeland defense exercises that allow Guard and local agencies to work together before a disaster scenario. Together, the CERFP and SPMC decontaminated and provided medical care to 10 patients who simulated severe trauma thanks to moulage, a type of makeup that provides responders with life-like injuries to treat.
