Patients with severe trauma are staged in Summit Pacific Medical Center (SPMC) emergency department during a Vigilant Guard exercise June 11, 2016, in Elma, Washington. Kentucky National Guard’s CBRNE Enhanced Response Force Package (CERFP), assisted SPMC with setting up and testing its abilities for decontamination of mass casualties for the first time in the hospital's three-year history as part of the Vigilant Guard program, a series of homeland defense exercises that allow Guard and local agencies to work together before a disaster scenario. Together, the CERFP and SPMC decontaminated and provided medical care to 10 patients who simulated severe trauma thanks to moulage, a type of makeup that provides responders with life-like injuries to treat.
