MARINE CORPS BASE HAWAII – Lt. Gen. John Toolan, the commander of Marine Corps Forces, Pacific, and a Brooklyn, N.Y., native, rides on a self-powered surfboard at the Marina & Outdoor Recreation & Equipment Center aboard Marine Corps Base Hawaii, June 7, 2016. Delegates from Japan, Australia and U.S. service members were given a demonstration of the self-powered surfboards, which could be adapted from recreational entertainment to a combat supportive system. The delegates were also given the opportunity to test out the boards themselves. The surfboards can provide potential military uses such as amphibious raids and river patrols. Currently the board is gas powered, which eliminates its stealth capabilities, but more testing and research will be implemented for the development of this technology. The self-powered surf board is slated to be showcased for the 2016 Rim of the Pacific exercise. (U.S. Marine Corps Photo by Lance Cpl. Jesus Sepulveda Torres)
