Lance Cpl. Matthew J. Hanks, with Task Force Koa Moana, fires a Beretta M9 pistol during a live fire range at sea on May 21, 2016 aboard USNS Sacagawea (T-AKE 2) during their deployment to train with multiple nations in the Asia-Pacific region. Marines and Sailors with the task force conduct basic military training such as live fire ranges, combat medical training and non-lethal weapons training at sea before they continue training with other nations such as Fiji, Tonga, Timor Leste and Papua New Guinea. The task force and participating nations will share infantry and engineering skills to increase interoperability, strengthen relationships and to promote peace in the region. Hanks, from St. Louis, Missouri, is a combat engineer originally assigned to Alpha Company, 9th Engineer Support Battalion, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, III Marine Expeditionary Force, currently operating with Task Force Koa Moana.
