SASEBO, Japan (May 22, 2016) Phil Eakins listens to guest speaker Commander, U.S. Fleet Activities Sasebo Capt. Matthew Ovios at the Soto Dam memorial, May 22, 2016. The annual memorial ceremony is held for the 53 American POWS and 14 Japanese who died building Soto Dam during World War II. Sasebo erected the memorial for both American and Japanese dead in 1956.
The original memorial placard listed only 31 names and Eakins, a civilian working on CFAS, worked to find the names of all the dead and have the list amended. The new placard with all the correct names was added to the memorial in 2010.
