Dr. Andrew Morris (left), U.S. Army Europe's chief historian, explains the history of World War I’s battles of Caporetto and Longarone, which Erwin Rommel led, to Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges, commanding general, U.S. Army Europe, during a staff ride in Longarone, Italy, April 5, 2016.
Staff rides are leader training events that use the setting of a historical campaign or battle as the basis for professional development. Hodges hosted the junior officer staff ride with select junior leaders and senior mentors in the vicinity of Kobarid, Slovenia, and Longarone, Italy, following the footsteps of Rommel and his troops.
