(From bottom to top) Navy AWO2 Claude Watson III, a naval air crewman systems operator with Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing 2, and a Salisbury, Md., native, and Amanda Braget, a Niceville, Fla., native, both watch for breaching humpback whales while participating in the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary’s annual ocean count event on Feb. 27, 2016, aboard Marine Corps Base Hawaii. During the watch, the volunteers monitor the water for signs of humpback whale activity, help record whale behaviors, complete a site map and contribute to public awareness about whale watch opportunities. The sanctuary strives to protect the growing population of humpback whales, as well as their habitats around the Hawaiian Islands, through education, community outreach, research and resource protection activities.
