Aids to Navigation Team Woods Hole service lights atop buoys and structures

Petty Officer 1st Class David Skena climbs a structure to replace an outdated 155 millimeter lantern with a self-contained LED Caramanah light, Sunday, March 1, 2016, in Buzzards Bay. The older 155 millimeter lanterns are powered by a battery, which is in turn charged by a solar panel. The new LED lights combine all of the separate elements of the older system into one component. “Installing the LEDs takes the need to service the lights from every six months up to two years, which means we spend less time maintaining the lights,” said Skena.
